Live auction trap: Fake goods are fake, promises to auction become empty talk
In recent years, live streaming rooms have become a high-risk area for calligraphy and painting fraud. The outlaws set up live broadcast rooms on Tiktok, Kwai and other platforms, with the "calligraphy and painting into thousands of homes" and "cultural renaissance" as the gimmicks, claiming to sell the calligraphy and paintings of Tang Bohu, Qi Baishi and other famous artists, and promised to connect with auction companies in the future, so that consumers can earn the difference through auction. For example, Mr. Lv spent tens of thousands of yuan to purchase dozens of "famous calligraphy and paintings" within six months, but never received the promised auction from the merchant. In the end, the merchant went missing and had no way to protect his rights. In similar cases, there are hundreds of victims and the amount involved exceeds 7 million yuan. These live streaming rooms often impersonate well-known institutions, such as "Rongbaozhai Calligraphy and Painting", using false authorizations, forged certificates and other means to gain trust, but in reality, they sell counterfeit products with a cost of only a few tens of yuan.
False identification and high price selling: street vendors transform into 'sky high priced collectibles'
Some companies, under the guise of "cultural dissemination" and "art investment," purchase ordinary calligraphy and painting at low prices from out of town vendors, and then package them as "masterpieces with huge appreciation potential" through false identification and exaggerated promotion, selling them at high prices to middle-aged and elderly people. For example, a company in Zhengzhou sells Huang Jiannan's works at a price of 30000 to 45000 yuan per piece, but the appraisal agency claims that their value is only 300 yuan. In such scams, merchants often use "free gifts" and "high returns" as bait to attract middle-aged and elderly people to participate, and delay refunds through false auctions, forgery of failed auction records, and other means, ultimately resulting in the disappearance of the payment.
Pyramid scheme auction scam: Beating drums to spread flowers, losing all principal
A more covert scam is called "calligraphy and painting auction" and is actually a pyramid scheme. Criminals set up fake platforms with the gimmick of "grabbing collections and raising prices by 5% the next day" to attract investors to participate. The platform creates the illusion of popular auction for collectibles by registering hundreds of accounts, but in reality, most of them are counterfeit or fake products. When there is a shortage of new investors, the platform crashes and the last buyer loses everything. For example, a certain platform attracted hundreds of people to participate within three months, involving a total amount of over 8.7 million yuan, and the person in charge was ultimately criminally detained. This type of scam often uses "membership system" and "head pulling rebates" as bait, taking advantage of investors' greed and developing downlines layer by layer.

Prevention guide: Keep your eyes open and avoid stepping on pitfalls
Verify the source and appraisal certificate: Merchants are required to provide complete proof of the source of the calligraphy and painting, such as auction records, collector certificates, etc., and verify the qualifications of the appraisal institution. Avoid trusting "authoritative certificates" easily, as some institutions may issue false certificates for profit.
Choose legitimate channels: Trade through well-known auction houses, galleries, or legitimate e-commerce platforms to avoid purchasing high priced calligraphy and paintings on unregulated platforms such as live streaming rooms and WeChat groups.
Retain transaction evidence: Save chat records, transfer vouchers, contracts, and other evidence for safeguarding rights. If you are found to have been deceived, report to the police in a timely manner and submit evidence.
Rational investment, rejecting the temptation of huge profits: The calligraphy and painting market carries extremely high risks, and behind every penny of money may be a piece of worthless paper. To avoid blindly following the trend due to greed, especially for middle-aged and elderly people, it is necessary to consult with family members before making decisions.
Selling celebrity calligraphy and paintings requires professional knowledge and rational judgment as a shield to avoid the pitfalls of market chaos. Cultural collection should be a combination of elegance and wisdom, rather than a speculative gamble.
