I am extremely excited to finally buy my beloved works of calligraphy and painting by a renowned artist. But you know what? The maintenance of calligraphy and painting after buying them at home is also very important. There is an ancient saying in the collection industry, 'Paper lasts for a thousand years, silk for eight hundred years', which refers to the upper limit of the lifespan of paper and silk cultural relics. If well preserved, Xuan paper has a lifespan of over a thousand years. Many collectors privately chat with me, wanting to know how to "maintain" famous calligraphy and painting works? As a collectible, calligraphy and painting are prone to damage if not properly maintained, which can affect their collection value. Therefore, learning to maintain them correctly is crucial.
There are many reasons for improper storage of famous calligraphy and painting works. Generally speaking, due to temperature differences caused by seasonal changes, uneven dryness and wetness, exposure to sunlight and ultraviolet radiation, pollution from environmental air and dust, etc., phenomena such as insect infestation, mold growth, and fading may occur, resulting in a complete calligraphy and painting work being unrecognizable and even losing its artistic value. If we can understand the weaknesses of some calligraphy and painting that are easily damaged, take effective preventive measures, and to some extent delay the process of calligraphy and painting becoming old and damaged, the lifespan of calligraphy and painting can be extended, and its original appearance can be preserved.
Today, the editor will share with you that starting from the following points, it is not difficult to do a good job of "maintenance" for famous calligraphers and painters!
01. Avoid direct exposure to strong light. Famous calligraphers and painters should not be hung in places where direct sunlight can reach them. Precious collections are best stored in a shaded area in a wooden box and should not be easily exposed to light.
02. Dust removal, insect prevention, and environmental pollution can cause significant damage to calligraphy and painting. Regularly clean the dust to avoid excessive dust accumulation and ensure the cleanliness of calligraphy and painting works.
In terms of preventing calligraphy and painting from being damaged by insects, camphor balls can emit a special odor to prevent insects, which has a good insecticidal effect. Place camphor medicine around the collection of calligraphy and painting works during use. It can be placed twice a year in stages, the first time in March to April and the second time in October to November, which has a better pest control effect.
03. When calligraphy and painting works are in a hanging state for a long time, the paper needs to withstand the sagging tension and tension, which weakens the strength of the paper. Therefore, after hanging for a period of time, it should be arranged to "rest and adjust". Rolling is to put calligraphy and painting in a resting state, allowing it to restore its original tension and tension. Painting and calligraphy works can be displayed alternately for appreciation.
04. Temperature and Moisture Control: Calligraphy and painting works, whether they are vertical scrolls, screens, couplets, hand rolls, booklets, fans, or squares, are basically two types of paper and silk fabrics, both of which contain fiber and have moisture absorption properties. Therefore, calligraphy and painting should not be placed in damp places.
The temperature of the calligraphy and painting storage space should be maintained at around 14 ℃~20 ℃, and the relative humidity should be between 50%~60%. If the indoor relative humidity is high, it is easy to cause paper to become damp and mold to grow. Mold is most likely to reproduce under humid, warm, and dark conditions.
But it should not be too dry, as it can easily cause the calligraphy and painting to warp and become brittle. When the weather is too dry, wet mop can be used to mop the floor, or a basin of water can be placed in the room. When the weather is humid, especially during the rainy season, try to keep windows closed as little as possible to control the humidity in the room. Generally, art museums have constant temperature and humidity conditions. There is another trick, when hanging calligraphy and painting, do not directly stick it to the wall. It is best to have a distance of about five centimeters between scrolls and the wall.
05. Remember not to touch water when painting or calligraphy works. Once they absorb water, it will cause damage to the paper, which will greatly reduce the value of the painting or calligraphy.
06. Do not harm the protection of calligraphy and painting. When appreciating, do not touch the picture with your fingers. When unfolding and rolling, do not break the painting and leave creases. Collected calligraphy and painting will become brittle and easy to break due to age, so generally do not touch them casually. Be extra careful when collecting, holding, rolling, hanging, etc., and be gentle with your hands and feet.
07. Good framing and collection. Long framing is a very important part of the process of collecting calligraphy and painting, and the quality of framing directly affects the shelf life of calligraphy and painting. Hand mounted calligraphy and painting can be re mounted, uncovered, and repaired, while machine mounted calligraphy and painting cannot.
So handmade framing plays a very important role. Handmade paste can make the underlying calligraphy and painting smooth, insect proof, and better inherit good Chinese calligraphy and painting.
This is also the reason why calligraphy and painting have always insisted on manual framing. Although it is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and increases labor costs, it can ensure the collection value. Calligraphy and painting adhere to manual framing, creating exquisite calligraphy and painting works with ingenuity.
How to deal with dampness in calligraphy and painting? Many collectors are very curious about this issue, especially in the humid coastal areas of the south. Sometimes, it is inevitable that calligraphy and painting will get damp. In case of dampness, this can be remedied: if mold spots are found on the surface of the calligraphy and painting, they can be gently cleaned with rice paper. If it cannot be cleaned, the mounting should be removed because the mold spots will slowly erode the calligraphy and painting, which is very harmful to it.
But the process of removing frames is another complex procedure, so in order to avoid damage to calligraphy and painting, precautions should be taken during the collection process to prevent mold growth.
After removing the frames and frames of calligraphy and painting, if a lot of moisture is found, do not directly expose it to the sun. Xuan paper will become brittle when exposed to the sun and should be slowly dried.
Have you learned the above points that need to be paid attention to in the maintenance of calligraphy and painting? During the collection process, it is important not to cause damage to the artwork due to momentary negligence. Proper maintenance of calligraphy and painting should be done to ensure that cherished pieces can be better collected and passed down to future generations.
